Assignment Description

Our client is currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in detailed mechanics with small tolerances and tolerance chains. The project involves a high degree of collaboration between mechanical and electrical design, requiring hands-on testing, prototyping, and an ability to alternate between fast conceptual design and detailed final design work.

The role also involves working on a mechatronic solution for a goods transportation system, including the design and development of shuttles, rail structures, charging stations, and a management system. This project is part of an exciting new venture in semiconductor manufacturing for our client, and it includes close collaboration with a customer in southern Europe.

Project Overview

The project goal is to design, develop, test, and deploy a mechatronic solution that includes a number of shuttles in a goods transportation system. The shuttles, their rail structures, charging stations, and the overall management system (mechanical, electrical, and software design) are all integral parts of this project. The development team, based in Sweden, is responsible for the requirements breakdown, design, implementation, and testing of all components before delivery to the commissioning team.

During the installation and commissioning phases, the development team will be heavily involved, which may require some travel to customer sites in southern Europe. The role requires the ability to work under tight time constraints while maintaining close cooperation with product owners and other key stakeholders.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Design, test, and debugging of product features, which could be mechanical, electrical, or software-related.
  • Contribute to defining and specifying product requirements in collaboration with the product owner and other stakeholders.
  • Estimate work packages and assist project management in breaking down time plans.
  • Produce and maintain documentation.
  • Work hands-on in laboratory environments, especially during testing and debugging phases.
  • Effectively work in a hybrid work environment with flexible office places.
  • Hands-on debugging during tests.
  • Train the support team.
  • Collaborate closely with the mechanical engineering team.
  • Play a significant role in the development of a mechatronic solution for goods transportation, including shuttles, rails, charging stations, and management systems.
  • Involvement in installation and commissioning phases, with a potential need for travel to the customer site in southern Europe (a few times/year, as needed).

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional relevant work experience is required.
  • Detailed mechanics experience with small tolerances and tolerance chains.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks.
  • Experience in mixing design work with hands-on prototyping and testing in laboratory environments.
  • Able to alternate between fast conceptual design and detailed final version design.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience working closely with design houses on electronic design.
  • Ability to analyze and debug printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electrical schematics.
  • Experience contributing to EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) compliance and testing.
  • Familiar with electrical safety regulations.
  • Experience in power supply and electrical design.
  • Experience with integrating motors and sensors into systems.
  • Experience in AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles), AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robots), or other mechatronic solutions for industrial automation.
  • Familiarity with SEMI standards within automation (e.g., E84) or safety (e.g., S2).
  • Experience with clean room applications (ISO 5).

Desired Attributes:

  • Ability to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions.
  • Focused on delivering customer and business value in the industrialization of solutions.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and the ability to work in a structured manner.
  • Both written and spoken English skills are required.
  • Ability to clearly convey information to non-technical colleagues.
  • Open-mindedness and the ability to cooperate effectively with a growing team on a tight project timeline.
  • Available to travel within Europe, though not frequently (a few times per year, based on project demand).
  • Capable of taking a leading and coordinating role in specific areas or across the whole project.
